All Eyes on Manukau: youth photographic competition

Competition closes 12 noon, 30 January

Manukau Libraries have launched a new youth photographic competition. All Eyes on Manukau is aimed at confronting the ‘South Auckland’ stereotype and celebrating the diversity of the city.

Youth are encouraged to take photos of ‘their’ Manukau, giving them the chance to profile their daily lives, family, friends, neighbourhoods and things that matter to them.

The top prize for the best photo is a digital camera and there will be a people’s choice award as well. Chosen semi-finalists will be displayed at various Manukau Libraries and the public will be asked to vote for their favourite.

WaiArt Portrait Awards

Entry deadline: 1 February

The first biennial Wai Art Portrait Exhibition will be open to all New Zealand artists and will require a portrait of a New Zealand resident person along with a short written explanation on the reasons why that person was chosen by the artist.

This exhibition will allow the artist to recognize someone influential and important in his or her life. So often we fail to express our appreciation, our affection and even our love for those who mean so much to us.

Up to three entries are allowed per artist.

  • West Coast & Buller

Regions with entry open 30 January – 22 May:

  • Wanganui
  • Hawke's Bay

This year, enhancements to the art awards programme means that regional communities as well as artists benefit from the programme.

Three finalists per region will be selected and profiled. The winner receives $2,000, first runner up $1,000 and second runner up $500.

Community initiatives will be supported in each of the 18 regions rather than via one centralised charity. Finalists will be asked to nominate one of three pre-selected charitable initiatives they wish to see supported.

Our independent panel of judges will select three finalists and then the public gets to vote on the winner. Details of the charitable initiative the artist has nominated will be included as part of the voting process.

The winning artwork, along with the first and second runners up, will be auctioned at the annual Yellow Pages Group Arts Charity Auction. All of the money raised will go towards a new charitable trust, which will distribute funds for local initiatives. The community initiative that benefits in each region will be the one chosen by the winning artist.
